Yea I'm in Austin, Texas these days working for AMD again. A lot has happened since my last post. Most importantly, I asked my wonderful Rachel to marry me on Easter weekend. We are getting married on December 19, 2006 in Evansville, Indiana. Pastor Herring (Ben Herring's father) will be wedding us together as well as conseling us. We will be honeymooning in Jamaica during Christmas and will come back shortly before New Years. Our wedding is going to be very small. We will be inviting many people to our wedding celebration after our honeymoon. Don't know where or when yet. We will have pictures and stories of our Jamaica experience and what we plan on doing in future together.

Back to work for me!

=D

I had a great time with Rachel for our first Valentine's weekend together. I made her a romantic dinner (as romantic as I could get in our G-hetto apartment). I think she liked it :)

Heard a great sermon at church this evening about sex/pleasure/suffering. One quote that really stood out was "Christ matures us through suffering". It was mentioned that abstaining from any type of sexual pleasure before marriage can be thought of as "suffering" that will only make us stronger (and is ultimately very rewarding). Way cool. God's desire and test for us to obey him and be patient is so worth it. Once you have passed the test, he will reward you with something more than you can imagine.

Makes me feel all warm inside, like a gooey marshmellow....mmmm marshmellows....*drool*......

Another crazy week ahead...not quite as crazy as last week, but still crazy.

Time a flyin'

After this week is over with, the semester will be 1/3 of the way through! We went and saw Chris Thile (lead singer of Nickel Creek) and Mike Marshall pick away at their mandolins at the Old Town School of Folk Music. We walked all over town, at least 5 miles worth of walking! We checked out N. Michigan Avenue's shops, walked along Lake Shore Drive, ate at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company on Navy Pier, strolled through Shed Aquarium, and rode in taxis. We even took the train to and from Chicago for kicks--I recommend it over driving. God has been so great to me! He has been great to others around me too. I continuely thank God for all he has done for me. God is a cool cat.

Rachel recently asked me, "So what has God been doing for you in your life?". I instantly reflected on how I have changed within the past 6 months or so. When I did so, I realized how much more patience I have with daily challenges. Yes, I still struggle with my patience level (especially with annoying homework assignments!). But I think that God is going to continually improve me as time goes on. I'll never be perfect, but I can strive for it! It went by much faster than I expected it to, which toadally r0x0rz. I have a much better line-up of classes this semester, classes that I will actually enjoy and that will be meaningful toward my career aspirations. I've finally made it to my computer architecture class, the class I have been wanting to take since I started my ECET major. My classes this semester are as follows:

ECET 325 - Computer Architecture, I'll get to study discrete math, programming algorithms, and learn about computer architecture.

ECET 359 - PC application class, I'll get to write a series of programs in Visual Basic to control external hardware via USB. It will keep me busy, but should be fun.

ECET 307 - Calculus and waveforms. I'm scared. We'll see how it goes.

POL 141 - Governments of the world, I'm not a political science kinda guy, but of all the available courses I was able to take for my elective, this seemed like the most beneficial course. Its going to be hard staying awake in class though :(

Its amazing how much I have changed since the beginning of last semester. I remember how arrogant and cocky I was. I remember what God put me through and I have learned to not be that way anymore. I feel so much better with my approach to studies this semester :)

My Christmas break was a great time, as always. Being with my sweetheart Rachel made it extra special this year. The break started out meeting up with Rachel at IUPUI. I got to check out her work/office and meet some of her co-workers. They all seemed really nice. Shortly after, we picked up my sister Megan and went over to Nothing But Noodles to grab a bite to eat. Our bite to eat there included a ginormous head of cotton candy about the size of a watermellon! It tasted like sour apple, and we ate it all :). After eating there, we left for Greenwood and got some coffee cake baking supplies. The next morning, we got started on the coffee cakes. I was the designated apple peeler. I peel apples with an attitude. I peel apples with passion. I peel apples with a smile. I peel apples with....ok I'll stop now. We made like 16 coffee cakes total (say what!? you say?). Yea we made a lot and it took a long time. Rachel has a lot of middle school girls that she leads, so she wanted to give each of their familes a coffee cake. After we made the cakes, we delivered to each of the girls homes...well kinda. It took a lot longer go to each of the girls houses. I think we successfully delievered three cakes and we went to a total of 7 houses. People just weren't home and it got late very quickly. We eventually ventured back to the house to wrap presents. Rachel taught me the fine art of rapping...err wrapping. The next day, we went to Church and then I went home.

I got to know state road 37, 45, and 57 very very well during break.

I came home for the first week of break and hung out with my parents. We caught up on things and talked about stuff. I did some stuff around the house and picked up a couple of last minute things for Christmas. I also creatively wrapped Rachel's presents :). Not much else went on during the first week of break, expect for getting a lot of sleep. On Christmas Eve Eve, I drove back up to Greenwood and went shooting with Rachel's dad. Shooting at targets with hand guns, such a great way to bond =P. Later that evening, I got to hang out with Rachel's extended family at her Aunt Liz's house. She has a big and very nice family. I had met most of them before hand, but there were a few new faces. Great time!

On Christmas Eve, Rachel and I just took it easy for most of the day. We went to church that evening with her parents, brother, and her brother's girlfriend. When we got back, it was present time! I got pots and 4lbs of gummy worms! Rachel and I just got each other very simple, inexpensive gifts since we are going to be taking dance lessons throughout this semester.

On Christmas Day, we got up early and headed down to Evansville to spend time with my extended family. My grandma's house is the traditional place to have Christmas every year, so its always fun. We had a great meal, had great desert, exchanged gifts, and then chatted about stuff. We then headed back to my parents house for our own gift exchange. I got more pots! After the gift exchange, we all watched Big Fish--an excellent movie that I highly recommend--and called it a night. What a great Christmas it was. The best gift I received this Christmas was Rachel :D.

We returned to Greenwood the following morning and I spent a couple of days there getting random things done while Rachel was at work. I then returned back to Evansville and planned on seeing Rachel again during New Years. Unfortunately, I didn't get to be with her during New Years. She bumped her head at work and got a moderate concussion. I'm just so thankful nothing worse happened to her--I was really scared for a while!

During the last week of break I got to have a great time with some of my friends that I rarely see. We through a LAN party at Jason's house. We played Farcry, Warcraft III, and some Serious Sam 2. It was a lot of fun and the entire time I was there, I kept realizing that it was probably going to the be the last LAN party I have with those guys for a long time or ever.

The rest of break I just took it easy at home, sorted and through away about 60lbs of stuff, and got some reading in. Rachel got me Wild at Heart by John Elderedge. It is excellent. This book is helping me become a better man of God. It also is assisting in preparing my heart for when I become a husband and eventually a father myself.

I stopped by Greenwood again on my way back up to Purdue and hung out with Rachel and her family some more. Her mom had a birthday party at Cheeseburger in Paradise which was a really cool restaurant. I think she had a great birthday :).

That was pretty much my break. I hope ya'lls break was great too!

Until then...

My mega blog is on que, school work comes first unfortunately...It'll be here soon!

I've been listening to Death Cab For Cutie here lately. I didn't have to take a quiz in my 7:30am class this morning, which was a great surprise. I like surprises. I got my exam back from Friday, definitely didn't do as well as I thought I did. But it isn't horrible. I'm still smiling, grades aren't a life or death matter to me anymore.

I had a fantastic Saturday and Sunday with Rachel this weekend. We checked out the Lord of the Rings exhibit and the Indiana State Museum. There were costumes, jewelry, and interesting information about all the different characters in the movies. I am astonished at how much detail was put into those movies. There were several video kiosks that had short clips on the making of fight scenes, costumes, make-up, etc. that kept us entertained. It was super-duper nerdy cool. After checking out the museum, we went for a nice fall afternoon walk around the canal. This was only my second time around the canal, but it still felt like the first time being there :). Atop one of the canal bridges we took a picture of ourselves and it turned out great!

[Insert aww statement here]

One cool thing about this picture, it only took one shot. No second shots, the first one was perfect--w00t.

After walking around the canal, we ventured over towards the "Wholesale District" and walked around in the mall. Rachel, with her exquisite fashion taste, assisted me in picking out a new pair of Steve Madden casual shoes (very comfy) and a couple of shirts from AE. We walked around some more and visited various shops along the way. Shortly after, we made our way down to P.F. Changs Chinese Bistro to grab a very delicious meal. It's great being able to share my seafood tastes with somebody else who appreciates seafood--just makes Rachel even more special ;). It seems like most people I know think seafood is disgusting--boy, they don't know what they are missing.

After filling ourselves up with fabulous seafood (with some to spare), we made our way out to the downtown streets to walk around some more. We walked around the main circle and just talked, smiled, and laughed about whatever--great time. Once we finished exploring the downtown streets, we drove over to the Broad Ripple area to see if much was going on. I was curious about the area and was hoping to see a diverse crowd, but unfortunately it was pretty dead around there. Since our feet and legs were sore from so much walking, we decided to just head back to Greenwood and relax with Batman Begins. After the movie we called it a night--what a fantastic night it was.

Sunday morning Rachel introduced me to her church Mount Pleasant. The church is exactly the same style that I have grown up with, so there was nothing out there about it. The minister gave one of the best messages I have heard in a long time about fellowship. I was completely astonished by what he had to say and there were several things, from the message, that I know I can apply to my life in regards to friendships/relationships. After church, we headed back to her house where we were greeted by several of her extended family members. Keep in mind that this was only the second time I have visited Rachel in Greenwood (at her house of course), and I have already several of her family members. I thought it was pretty cool, normally I would be pretty nervous and akward in such a situation--but I wasn't, why should I be?...they were so nice and friendly. We all watched the Indianapolis Colts stomp the Houston Texans, increasing the Colts record to 7-0 (go Colts!). I actually got to eat some good wholesome chili and zesty grilled cheese--I beg for food like this at Purdue. Shortly after the game, everyone started heading out to go home.

I left shortly after her family members did. Its hard having to be apart from Rachel for a week at a time, I miss her. But, its better than a month at a time, I suppose :). The drive back to West Lafayette went fast, mainly cause I was going fast, but the fall leaves kept me entertained. I wish the colors would stick around for a long time...

Thanks for the fantastic time this weekend Rachel! You are so amazing and beautiful to me!

Woah...

It's already the 9th week of the 15 week semester! I can't believe how fast time is going!

Something really hit me this week. Several of my close friends are going to be graduating this upcoming spring. Before I know it, I am going to be attending graduation watching them grab their hard-earned pieces of paper in front of Hovde Hall. I just wish I had chosen the major I have now so I could be joining them. I have to wait until August 07...man...thats a long time from now. Oh well, God makes everything happen for a reason. It is comforting to know that I have some friends in the same boat as me...

Things are going great with me currently. I can't believe it. Time flies when you are having fun and when you are really busy. I don't even know where to begin with this blog.

I think this semester has been a huge transformation for me. Nothing this semester has gone for me the way I expected it to. To start off, I decided to try taking 19 credit hours of class. I thought it would be easily manageable, but boy was I wrong. I got quickly swamped with more work than I could sanely manage. I realized how stubborn and stupid I was being trying to do so much, so I finally dropped a course which brings me back to the usual 15hrs. I have been able to have a social life with my current work load!

I also came into this semester thinking I would easily get a 4.0. Boy was I wrong--again. I am hoping that I get a 3.0! Classes have gotten much, much more difficult and I feel like I am not on top of my classes at all. I am so used to getting mostly A's and now I am getting low B's and C's. I can't believe myself, honestly. I'm not used to this at all--it hurts. It hurts so much that it has caused me to reflect on some areas in my life related to my academics. I really think its God's way of showing me how arrogant and prideful I have been about my academic acheivements. God is giving me a big wake-up call and I am listening. I am learning to swallow my pride and realizing that I don't know as much as I thought I did. God carries out his will in unexpected ways, I totally did not see this one coming. Through all of this I hope to come out a better person having learned from my mistakes. Sometimes pain is only way to truely realize something about yourself.

Another greatly unexpected thing has happened to me this semester as well. For years I have been praying, waiting patiently, and searching to find that person God has been wanting me to have. She is completely worth the wait I have been enduring for so long. She has everything I have been looking for and she continues to surprise me with more great things everyday. Her name is Rachel. I know our friendship is going to be an exciting and adventurous one--with God leading us wherever we may go. I finally get my chance to be the man God has shaped me to be and treat her like the princess she is with respect and integrity. Rachel, you truely are beautiful and amazing.

I am just finishing Purdue's great fall break--boy did I need it after three ridiculously hard exams in one week. I am already dreading finals :(....would Christmas break get here already! I can't wait till I can sit by the fire and eat cinnamon and sugar glazed roasted pecans with my family!

Only a three day week! w00t! Then I get to see Rachel! I can't wait!

I'm going to sleep!

-Josh

So much going on...

I really need to update, but you will just have to wait till I go on Fall break...when I don't have 3 exams to worry about :)

Hope all is well with ya'll.

Back in Indiana...

Well I am back in the midwest--good ole smelly (literally) West Lafayette, Indiana. My adventure in Texas was quite a fun and exciting one. I learned a lot about myself and microprocessors ;). It was sad leaving Austin and everyone I met down there, but knowing I will be back this summer gives me comfort. It feels good to be back at Purdue and hanging out with friends here.

This semester has been quite time consuming and annoying so far. I am taking 19 credit hours (crazy you say!--yea it is), which is keeping me busy with homework and lab work. Despite being crazy busy with school work, I am still managing to have some fun around here. For instance, my great friend Jason Howard from BSU (former IU, USI, and Tskuba student) came down labor day weekend and hung out around the apartment. We went to a party and watched several movies. Good times indeed.

This weekend, so far, I went down to Greenwood, IN with John Ruble and met up with a couple of his Center Grove friends, Rachel and Kari. We all went to a German themed carnival/fair and enjoyed great polka music, food, and beer. This fair felt like something out of a movie for some reason, which made it even more fun. It was cool getting to know a couple new people as well, something I really enjoy.

I just got back from the Purdue vs. Akron football game. Lots of fun. We did manage to win by a high margin...but it was painful watching Purdue make so many little mistakes against a crappy team. They best be fixin' their problems before next weekend!

Well, there is my update. Who know when I will update again...you know me. Laters.

Life is so bizarre...

I haven't felt so lonely in all my life. Sure, I have two roomates right now and I hang out with the other co-ops from AMD, but I still fee like I am completely alone and akward. Its so confusing and discouraging, I don't know what to make of all of it. It's most likely due to homesickness. I haven't been able to have discussions with anybody here and be truely open about it. It's like nobody cares...they may seem like they care, but they aren't truely listening.

I keep wondering what it will be like when I finally get out of school and I am completely on my own. Whenever all my college/high school buddies finally part and go their own ways and they all start getting married. I still know that my situation right now is temporary and its comforting to know that I will be back soon...but is it foreshadowing a not-to-be desired future? I fear that my non-outgoing nature is going to make things even harder down the road. I hate to "mingle" in large groups, I am extremely timid around girls, and I am horrible at starting/keeping converstations going.

Time has been flying around here, everything is a blur anymore--which just adds to the confusion. I guess thats a good thing, means I will get to come home soon. I'm not all depressed or anything, I just needed to get all of this off of my chest. I should go to a park, pet a kitten, or watch a slap-stick comedy--something.

I went to San Antonio on Monday with my roomate and cubemate from work. Its a neat place. The Alamo is tiny and its really funny how everything is built around and surrounding it. The main part of city is a whole lot smaller than I thought it would be. We checked out the riverwalk and of course the Alamo, ate at a hole-in-the-wall burger joint, and played in the fountains (well I did). It was like 100+ degrees out with high humidity so we didn't stay too incredibly long. We came back and watched the Austin fireworks show from Barton Creek Square Mall's parking lot. Watching fireworks from a distance sucks...I need to be right up next to them so I can hear the boom. Last summer in Muncie, IN Jason, Scott, and I watched their fireworks show and we were only like a football field away from where they were being set off...a great feeling :).

Work has been somewhat crazy. We are working with a brand new revision of silicon on a completely new tester that is still in development. My fellow techies, this is a true test of someones' patience. I have gotten to do a little bit of coding in Java, which has been fun. I actually made a GUI (graphical user interface) window!

Well, its getting late...maybe a good nights rest will make me feel better. Take care y'all...

-Josh

Message from the Republic of Texas

Time for another update. I like Texas. I love working for AMD. I couldn't be blessed with a more perfect job. As much as I love it here, I still wonder if I could live in Texas for a long period of time. I think this more of the homesick in me talking. I really do love Indiana, I am not ashamed of it. Its a beautiful state, like any state, if you are in the right places. Like they always say, there's no place like home and being near your families. I've got time to think about it. But when I do think about it, I keep realizing that there are simply no semi-conductor companies in the midwest.

I do miss everyone so much. I am really looking forward to coming back to the midwest and seeing everyone again. I am strangely ready for another semester of pain at Purdue. I guess I am looking forward to spending time with my friends before they all graduate. Much Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, and various PC games will be played. And how could I forget about Purdue football? We are going to the Rose Bowl this year.

I bought Coldplay's new album, X&Y and I am very impressed. They set the bar very high with their A Rush of Blood to the Head album and I think they definitely set a higher bar. I wish I could say the same for the new Dave Matthews Band album. It is incredibly disappointing. Sure, there are a couple of good songs on it, but overall it sucks. They need to stick with what they are good at, not inspire stupid R&B sounds into their music. Oh how I miss the good ole days of Crash, Under the Table and Dreaming, and Before These Crowded Streets.

Umm...thats all I got. Peace out my dawgs from da Burgh.

I'm still alive

I'm working on a new website that will utilize PHP, MySQL, and pretty CSS. I've been here about 6 weeks now and I am now just starting to get a true feel for the town. Austin has a large town feel and also a small town feel at the same time. The University of Texas has a lot to do with this. UT is right in the middle of Austin and all the cool shops and restaurants make it feel like Bloomington, IN--accept better. I've managed to make it down around UT quite a bit here lately. The traffic sucks, but its well worth the hassle to hang out around the campus. If out-of-state tuition didn't cost so much and I wasn't already a junior, I would definitely consider transferring here.

So you all want to know what AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) is like eh? I guess I should probably say something about it, since, after all, thats the reason I am here. AMD is has been a great and work-filled time. It's great hanging out with the other co-ops. I've been privelaged to meet students from UT (of course), Texas A&M, U of Michigan, Cornell, U of Illinois, U of Florida, and the coolest school of them all, Purdue. Every week we all get together and have our "DAA" (dinner around Austin) adventure and try out the really cool restaurants around here. The locals really push people to go to the local restaurants and even make T-shirts that say "Keep Austin Wierd" to promote this. As far as the "work" side of things go, AMD certainly keeps me busy. I am on the Dual-Core (yet to be released) Processor product development engineer team. I basically (at this point) run tests, gather data, present the data in a professional and meaningful fashion, and debug the problematic parts. It sounds pretty dry, and it is at times, but...I do get to play around with multi-million dollar test equipment which is really fun.

The apartment life has been pretty cool (as it always is). We somehow managed to get a hold of a "luxury" apartment for less than the market rate ($890/month instead of $1100/month). BMW's, Infiniti's, Jaguars, Corvette's, Porche's, and any other high-end car you can think of are constantly pulling in and out of our complex. This is definitely a luxury apartment. 9ft ceilings, 12ft family room ceiling, crown molding, yea you get the idea. I really don't need all of this, but it just happened to work out. A blessing indeed.

Now, since I share this nice apartment with two other co-op's--Jake, Computer Science major from Purdue and Dave, Computer Engineering major from U of Michigan--you can imagine that we have a lot of similar interests...and we do. Being geeks that we are, our apartment has become quite wired. Yes, there is definitely four 5.1 surround sound sets in our apartment. There is definitely 7 computers between the three of us (soon to be 8, thanks to Dave). We definitely have all the latest video game consoles connected to a high-definition TV with an assortment of games and movies. We definitely have a wicked fast cable internet connection (well, the fastest cable connection I have ever had). We are seldom bored.

Moving to Austin also provided me with another great opportunity. That opportunity was thankfully answered by God himself. Thats right, the opportunity to attend a great Texas church. This church is absolutely the best church community I have ever been a part of. The college ministry, ECHO, is sooo awesome. There are at least 200+ college students that attend the college group every Sunday from universities throughout town (primarily UT). I have met a bunch of great Texas guys through ECHO who love God and love to show me around the town. I have also joined a bible study group through ECHO. We are studying the life of David in a very deep and observant fashion.

I think good things are going to happen throughout this semester. God brought me down here for a reason, and I am experiencing his reason on a daily basis.

Sorry I left you all hanging for, like, what, three months since my last post? Wow, I am lazy. Anywho, I do miss you all back in the Midwest and can't wait to see you again....just when its warmer :)

-Josh-
